Toronto Pearson Havalimanindaki Bagaj Hirsizlik Cetesi Cokertildi
(Toronto Star January 5 2007) Bob Mitchell
Peel police say 7 male baggage handlers, aged 17 to 25, charged in months-long probe at Pearson aiport, were allegedly `loading and unloading bags, helping themselves to stuff'
January 05, 2007 Bob MitchellStaff Reporter
Seven airport workers, including a lead baggage handler, have been charged in a continuing police probe of thefts from passenger luggage at Pearson International Airport.
Arrests began in October, police confirmed yesterday. The accused, all male, and ranging in age from 17 to 25, include college students who worked part-time as baggage handlers at Canada's busiest airport.
Two men, including a 19-year-old lead hand, were nabbed earlier this week while they worked at the airport, police said.
"We don't believe this was an organized ring of seven people," said Det. Malcolm Bow of Peel's airport criminal division. "One or two might have known each other and they all worked in a very small area at Terminal 3 but there is no evidence that everybody knew everybody who was arrested. "These guys aren't sophisticated. They were just loading and unloading bags and helping themselves to stuff."
Bow said all of them had been working at Pearson for the past two to three years.
Police began their investigation after they noticed an increase in reported thefts by travellers from their luggage at Terminal 3 this summer.
Bow said property, such as digital cameras, jewellery and clothing, were taken from baggage of passengers both arriving to and departing from the terminal.
Various aircraft were involved, police said.
"Basically these baggage handlers were entrusted with loading and unloading travellers' baggage," Bow said.
"We're alleging they breached that trust by stealing stuff from bags."
Although exact details of the probe aren't being revealed, police admit some of those arrested were caught by surveillance.
"As a result we focused an investigation at that terminal and we've arrested seven people so far," Bow said.
"We've laid about 18 charges so far ranging from theft to possession of stolen property and stolen credit cards."
A stolen credit card and several cameras were among the stolen items found on Tuesday when the lead baggage handler and another person were arrested, police said.
Bow confirmed that all of those arrested no longer work at the airport.
More than $12,000 worth of stolen goods has so far been recovered, although police say many more items were reported stolen.
All of the accused have been released on bail, police said.
The names of the young offenders arrested are protected by Canada's youth laws.
Jamaal Cushnie, 19, of Toronto, the alleged lead baggage handler, has been charged with possession of stolen property, possession of a stolen credit card and possession of a controlled substance.
He's to appear in a Brampton court Feb. 5.
The busts are the latest to involve airport employees in the past several years at Canada's busiest airport, although they are not on the same scale as a series of arrests in 2004.
In that bust, police arrested eight people and dismantled a sophisticated ring that was believed responsible for the theft of $6 million worth of high-end electronic equipment and clothing from the cargo areas of Pearson over a six-year span.
More than 8,000 items were stolen.
Many of them wound up being sold over the Internet through eBay.
The ring, which was run by airport employees, used truckers working for legitimate companies to haul the stolen goods away from the airport.

THY to conduct market research on direct flights from England, Russia to Antalya
Turkish Airlines (THY) is planning to launch market research for direct flights from Britain and Russia to Antalya.
Antalya Trade and Industry Chamber Board (ATSO) Chairman Kemal Özgen declared that one of the most important problems of Antalya tourism is the lack of scheduled direct flights. He said that lack of direct flights is an obstacle to the expansion of congress, golf, health and culture tourism throughout the year.
He added: “THY management has already started research into countries such as Britain and Russia. For that purpose on Dec. 20-21 we will meet with travel agency officials to measure the potential of direct flights and ask their support.”
Özgen said Mediterranean Touristic Hotels Association (AKTOB) President Osman Ayık will also participate in the meeting and will support the initiative. “Our aim is to expand direct flights to other countries and to meet the needs of Antalya tourism,” he said.

Airline Alliances: Decoding the Mysteries of the Code Share - Tips and Tricks
NYTimes
MICHELLE HIGGINS 17 Aralik 2006
ON his way home to Washington last month from a business trip, Don Alberstadt, a quality assurance auditor, stood in line at the US Airways ticket counter in San Diego for 45 minutes, waiting to check his bag and check in for his nonstop flight to Washington, US Airways Flight 6560. But when he reached the desk, a US Airways agent told him there was no Flight 6560 — even though the itinerary he received from a corporate travel agency displayed that number and the US Airways logo.
Mr. Alberstadt, it turns out, was booked on a code-share flight, sold by US Airways but operated by United Airlines. He was sent to the United counter for check-in and stood in line for another 30 minutes. “I am just glad that I did not arrive at the airport only one hour prior to the flight departure,” he said, adding that “a simple F.Y.I.” about what to expect would have been helpful. “It seems to me that the travel industry — reservations, airports and airlines — is employing tactics that make travel more disruptive and anxious, rather than trying to make it more accommodating.”
Code share is the industry term for an agreement that allows airlines to sell one another’s flights as if they were their own. The code refers to the two letters airlines typically use to identify themselves on tickets and in computer-reservation systems. Domestic code-share agreements became popular between major airlines and regional feeder carriers as a way for major carriers to expand their network of flights without having to serve low-volume commuter markets directly at high costs.
Over the years, code-share affiliations were formed among United States and foreign airlines, as carriers searched for ways to expand their networks internationally. Now, as airlines continue to struggle financially, they are increasingly relying on code sharing to sell more tickets.
The number of flights originating in the United States that are operated by one carrier but sold by one or more other airlines has grown from about 1.1 million in 2000 to 4.3 million this year, according to Back Aviation Solutions, an industry consulting firm.
“The number of flights originating in the U.S. is slightly higher in 2006 than (post 9/11) 2002,” Frederick Roe, regional manager at Back Aviation Solutions, said in an e-mail message. “However, because of the huge increase in code sharing, passengers can find tickets marketed by multiple carriers at different prices for the exact same flight.”
Consider Delta Flight 1150 from Kennedy Airport in New York to San Francisco. It’s sold not only by Delta but also by four other airlines, each identifying it as its own: Alaska Airlines, Alitalia, Korean Air and El Al.
American Flight 21 from Kennedy to Los Angeles is sold by Alaska Airlines, Iberia, Qantas and Turkish Airlines. In all, American Airlines has code-share agreements with more than 20 airlines. Korean Air has code-share relationships with 22 international carriers. Lufthansa sells more than 15,000 code-share flights a week as its own, through agreements with 36 other airlines.
When tickets are put on sale, both the selling airline and the operating airline are required to disclose that a flight is a code share. It also must be noted on the tickets and boarding passes. But even though this may be clear on the ticket, travelers can still be uncertain about where to check in. Most airlines require check-in at the ticket counter of the airline operating the flight.
Sometimes it’s not until a traveler shows up at the airport that she realizes a ticket has landed her on another airline’s plane. And when problems arise, the traveler may be confused as to which airline to turn to. The airline that sold the ticket is typically responsible for reservation issues. But lost or damaged baggage claims are generally processed by the airline that handled the bags last.
Joe Brancatelli, the publisher of the subscription travel Web site http://www.joesentme.com/, sees code sharing as misleading. “It’s like putting Froot Loops in the Cheerios box,” he said. “People expect when they book something that says United Airlines, it’s owned and operated by United Airlines.”
Airlines say code-share agreements provide one-stop shopping for customers and improve the ease of travel by linking airlines’ route systems. In many cases, travelers can accrue and redeem miles on code-share flights. But that also means more fliers will compete for upgrades and free seats.
Other air travel perks, like those offered by credit cards, are often not honored on code shares. For example, American Express Platinum Card members typically receive free access to participating Continental, Delta and Northwest Airlines lounges in airports around the world by flashing their cards and airline tickets. But code-share agreements do not apply. So if you have a Continental code-share ticket on a Northwest flight, you can’t get access to the Northwest lounge. In other words, to use this perk, your ticket must match the metal you are flying in.
But as code shares become increasingly common, travelers are figuring out ways to game the system. Dean Caselli, 38, from Chicago, said he actively looked for code shares when booking flights online as a means to finding the lowest fare. “Sometimes the airline who is booking you through the other airline is actually cheaper by $20, $30 and occasionally a lot more,” said Mr. Caselli, who estimated he had saved as much as $75 on flights by searching online for the lowest code-share ticket.
Spotting a code-share flight online is relatively easy. Travel Web sites like Expedia, Travelocity and Orbitz all spell out which carriers operate flights. Expedia.com also uses a bi-directional arrow symbol to flag code shares. Orbitz.com goes a step further by listing the flight numbers for both the selling and operating airline. A recent search for one-way flights between Kennedy Airport and Seatle-Tacoma Airport pulled up American Airlines Flight 269 for about $250. That same flight sold by Alaska Airlines was listed for $719 to $721.
VISITOR INFORMATION
When several airlines sell tickets for a single flight, each under its own flight number, where does a traveler go for what? Here are some basic guidelines.
- To change an itinerary, contact the airline that sold you the ticket.
- Check in at the counter of the airline operating the flight.
- If your flight is canceled at the last minute, contact the operating airline.
- Submit lost baggage claims to the airline that handled your luggage last.
- If you want to use miles to buy an upgrade, you’re probably out of luck if you didn’t buy your ticket from the operating airline.

Lufthansa ile THY Code Sharing anlasmasi imzaladi
11.12.06 As early as next summer, Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines passengers will reap the benefits of bilateral cooperation between the two airlines. The cooperation agreement was signed today in Istanbul by Lufthansa Chairman and CEO Wolfgang Mayrhuber and Candan Karlitekin, Chairman of Turkish Airlines, following the announcement of Turkish Airline?s accession to Star Alliance. With the introduction of the 2007 summer timetable on 25 March, Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines will operate selected flights between the two countries on a codeshare basis and harmonise their flight schedules. For passengers, this will mean more frequencies, a wider choice of destinations and better connections at Lufthansa?s Frankfurt and Munich hubs, as well as at Istanbul. Participants in each airline?s frequent flyer programmes can collect miles on the Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines networks and also redeem them with the partner carrier. In the current winter timetable, Lufthansa offers flights to 183 destinations in 78 countries. Together, Lufthansa and the other Star Alliance member airlines provide connections to 841 destinations in 157 countries. Thanks to the new codeshare agreement with Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa passengers will be able to choose from a further 27 destinations in Turkey and the Middle East. Passengers from Turkey will have a much wider choice of flights from Turkey to Western Europe, the United States and Canada. Deutsche Lufthansa AG Corporate Communications

Kanadanin "Open Sky" programi
Nov. 27, 2006. 04:48 PM Toronto Star
ROMINA MAURINO
CANADIAN PRESS
Airline and travellers' groups are cheering a government plan to open up Canada's skies to more competition, saying open-skies agreements with more countries will allow them to reach new markets and reduce ticket prices for consumers.
"Under the policy, Canada will pursue open agreements ... when it is in Canada's overall interest and we will pursue more liberalized agreements on a reciprocal basis where obstacles exist to a true open-skies agreement," Transport Minister Lawrence Cannon said Monday at Toronto's Pearson International Airport.
Air Canada said it was happy with the "Blue Sky" plan — in particular the minister's emphasis on the need for reciprocal benefits.
"The key here isn't so much the principle of open skies but what the minister said, which was that there had to be reciprocal benefit," said Duncan Dee, Air Canada's senior vice-president of corporate affairs.
"It basically means that we would pursue open skies agreements with those countries that could provide the same opportunities to Canadian carriers — countries like Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Germany, France. These are major trading partners, which would allow us to benefit equally as the carriers from those countries."
Currently, Canada only has two open-skies agreements, with the United States and Britain, while the U.S. has 77 open-skies agreements, Australia three, Chile seven, New Zealand 10 and Singapore nine. The European Union has a complete open-skies regime.
Open skies agreements eliminate rules that dictate such things as how many air carriers are allowed from each market, what destinations they may serve, and how many times they may fly.
Air Canada has "benefited tremendously," from the current agreements, Dee said, adding that on the Canada-U.S. market, the Montreal-based airline is "the largest single carrier operating between both countries and we see a lot of opportunities there."
The move could also mean better fares and more choice for Canadian travellers as Ottawa wants the price, quality, frequency and range of air services to be determined by market forces.
"It's all about competition: when you have more competition you have more choice; it's always good for the consumer," commented Christiane Theberge of the Alliance of Canadian Travel Associations.
"Let's hope that they will sign agreements according to that policy, because we haven't seen that many (open sky) agreements signed so far."
The Air Transport Association of Canada also welcomed the announcement, calling it "an important step in the right direction, particularly insofar as the Minister of Transport has recognized the need to address government fees and charges, which affect the competitiveness of Canada's air carriers," CEO, Sam Barone.
He also stressed the need to reduce airport rents, fuel taxes and passenger security charges, which, it says, place Canadian carriers at a disadvantage.
The Canadian Airports Council, for its part, called on the government to "aggressively pursue" new Open Skies agreements, since air traffic between Canada and the U.S. nearly doubled since the first liberalization in 1995.
"With a legacy of restrictive agreements in place with some of our most important markets for tourism and trade, the government now must aggressively pursue Open Skies agreements to increase choice and competition in international air service," stated Airports council CEO Jim Facette.
"Canadian travellers, shippers and the communities our members serve will benefit most from increased choice and improved tourism and trade links."
The government came up with the new policy after consulting major stakeholders in the airline industry.
The Conservatives signed the U.K. agreement within a few months of getting into office, and had said they wanted to start with negotiations with other countries that would allow their airlines to fly in and out of Canada as often and as much as they want — as long as Canadian airlines get the same access to those foreign markets.
The new policy doesn't affect domestic air service between two Canadian cities, which belong to Canadian air carriers only.
On the Toronto stock market Monday, Air Canada (TSX: AC.B) stock fell 7.3 per cent, or $1.41, to $17.91, while parent company ACE Aviation Holdings (TSX: ACE.A) fell 20 cents to $37.20.
WestJet Airlines Ltd. (TSX: WJA) traded at $13.76, down 12 cents.
